How to Volunteer

Join us for meaningful volunteer opportunities in a diverse learning community. Choose from a range of volunteer opportunities: one-day team events; computer lab support; or a weekly commitment as a classroom tutor.

Computer lab volunteers participate in a one-hour orientation, and then choose a volunteer schedule that works best for them.

Classroom tutors commit to weekly engagement with students. You do not need to be a teacher or speak another language! Our tutor training series will teach you how to develop student-centered lesson plans, locate educational resources, and feel confident in the classroom. Here are the steps you’ll take to become a classroom tutor:

  • visit LVGH’s Hartford Literacy Center for a welcome meeting with a staff member

  • observe two classes (usually the same day as your welcome meeting)

  • participate in a three-session Tutor Training Series at our Hartford Literacy Center

  • engage in a two-part student teaching experience

Once all training requirements are fulfilled, tutors typically begin teaching at the start of the next term.

  • Wednesday, April 30th, 10 AM-12 PM

  • Wednesday, May 7th, 10 AM-12 PM

  • Wednesday, May 14th, 10 AM-12 PM

  • Tuesday, April 29th, 6 PM-8 PM

  • Tuesday, May 6th, 6 PM-8 PM

  • Tuesday, May 13th, 6 PM-8 PM

 

Volunteer Opportunities for Groups

We also welcome corporate and community groups for short-term or day-long projects.
